Debra Fialek joins the Richmond Symphony this fall as their new second horn player. She comes to Virginia from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she held the same position with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. For the last nine seasons, Ms. Fialek also played principal horn with the Santa Fe Symphony.
A native of the Chicago area, Debra earned a bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois University. She then spent two years in San Francisco, earning a master's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Recently she lived for fifteen months in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where she played both principal and second horn with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. She can be heard playing principal horn on their recording of Josef Suk's "Asrael Symphony."
While in Albuquerque, she spent a year as acting associate professor of horn at the University of New Mexico, and also played with many local chamber and orchestral groups, including new music ensemble Chatter, The Church of Beethoven, and the Santa fe Opera, as well as joining Albuquerque ska band, Danny Winn and the Earthlings, on their CD, "… And the Mission Begins…."
This summer Debra will play with the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder for a few weeks before moving to Richmond. She is looking forward to a very exciting season of performances with the Williamsburg Symphonia, the Atlantic Chamber Ensemble, and of course, the Richmond Symphony!
