50th Anniversary Concert and Gala

An industrious group of Richmond’s community leaders met in the spring of 1957. At that time, they initiated a fundraising effort to secure Founders and Patrons, identifying the artistic leadership and resources necessary to produce an orchestra and inaugural season. Their dream was realized with the opening concert on October 28, 1957 at the Mosque (now Landmark Theater). Edgar Schenkman took the baton at that concert, becoming the first Music Director for the Richmond Symphony and serving in that role for 12 years.

To mark the Richmond Symphony Orchestra’s Golden Anniversary, this concert will honor the contributions of Edgar Schenkman and recreate the inaugural performance of the Symphony’s 1957-1958 three-concert season. Highlighting the program will be Beethoven’s Concerto No. 4 in G Major, featuring acclaimed pianist Stephen Prutsman, a piece performed by pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Symphony’s first concert.
