The Richmond Symphony's flagship educational program consists of four youth orchestras providing beginning to advanced musical training. As the premiere orchestral training program of central Virginia, students participate in weekly rehearsals, coaching and masterclasses by Richmond Symphony musicians, chamber music performances, mentoring and other musical and social activities.

2008 Summer String Session
The 2008 Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestras (RSYO) Summer String Session will be June 22 - June 28, 2008, at Appomattox Regional Governor's School (ARGS) in Petersburg, Virginia. The RSYO Summer String Session is for rising 6th - current 12th grade string players only. Students must have three years of experience on their instrument to enroll. This 7-day camp provides students the opportunity to study and perform with professional musicians from the Richmond Symphony. Students are placed in large group and chamber ensembles that suit their level of ability. Students must have 3+ years of experience on their instrument to enroll.

Orientation: Sunday, June 22, 6-8pm
Week-day Camp: M-F, June 23-27, 9am-4pm
Dress Rehearsals: Saturday, June 28, 9am-12pm
Lunch and Final Concert: Saturday, June 28, 12-3pm
FREE week-day bus transportation is available from Meadowbrook High School, with pickup at 8:15 am, and dropoff at 4:30pm.
Summer String Session Faculty
This year's summer string session faculty will feature Richmond Symphony Associate Conductor Erin Freeman, String Sinfonietta Conductor Rebecca Jilcott, ARGS Orchestra Director Michelle Basile, RSO Principal 2nd Violinist Susanna Klein, RSO Violinist Steven Hakel, RSO Violist and Camerata Strings Conductor Joseph Wargo and RSO Assistant Principal Cellist Jason McComb.
Summer String Session Electives
For Summer Session 2008, ALL students will participate in intermediate or advanced orchestra, chamber music, music skills classes and lessons with RSO master teachers. In addition, on Monday thru Thursday, students will participate in one or more electives: Music Composition, College Audition Preparation, Introduction to Viola, Fiddle Class, and more! Enrolled students will be contacted in June to make elective choices.
Please note that class size is limited, and this years summer string session will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so register now! Please complete both an application and return to RSO with payment or credit card number (VISA, MC, AMEX) or check/money order if by mail.
Early Bird applications must be postmarked Friday, April 30. All other applications must be received by Friday, June 6. No tuition refunds for student withdrawal will be awarded after May 31, 2008.
