SUMMARY:Remembering 1968: A Tribute to MLK
DESCRIPTION:1968 was a time of both political and civil unrest. The world was in a state of disarray and turmoil. Martin Luther King Jr. served as a source of hope and light for the masses in a time that seemed hopeless and dark. Remembering 1968: A Tribute to MLK Jr. is comprised of pieces that honor the legacy of a man who was fearless in his charge to fight the injustices of the world. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. had the power to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds to march for and believe in the common good. Join us for a concert celebrating unity and peace\, and be moved by inspirational words and music! \nWe are thrilled to announce that this program will feature several VERY special guest narrators to guide you through each moving piece. On Saturday\, February 3rd at 8pm\, we will be joined by Mayor Levar Stoney\, and on Sunday\, February 4th at 3pm we will have Kelli Lemon (Coffee with Strangers RVA) and Gary L. Flowers (The Gary Flowers Show) with us! No matter which performance you choose to attend\, this is sure to be a memorable program that will leave you feeling invigorated and inspired. \nThis program includes compositions by Mary Watkins\, Jonathan Bailey Holland\, Beethoven\, and local legend Undine Smith Moore and features a combined choir with voices from Longwood University\, Norfolk State University\, the Richmond Symphony Chorus\, Virginia Commonwealth University\, Virginia State University\, and Virginia Union University. The combined choir includes the same line-up of university choirs as when the Richmond Symphony hosted the world premiere of the Undine Smith Moore piece in 1982. and special guests: Bahati Barton (soprano)\, Kendall Gladen (mezzo-soprano)\, Colin Eaton (tenor)\, and Robert Cantrell (bass-baritone)\, and Terrence Wilson (piano). \nWe offer a free pre-concert talk with the Richmond Symphony Music Director\, Steven Smith an hour before each concert. These talks provide you with insight into the concert you are about to experience. \nChildren 18 and under receive free tickets to Altria Masterworks concert (excludes Mezzanine seating\, Opening Night\, and Special Concerts). Click Buy Tickets to “purchase”. \nHear the tempo so compelling\,\nhear the blood throb in my veins.\nYes\, my drums are beating nightly\,\nand the rhythms never change. \nEquality\, and I will be free.\nEquality\, and I will be free. \n— Maya Angelou \nLearn more about Steven Smith\, conductor\nLearn more about Richmond Symphony Chorus\nLearn more about Bahati Barton\, soprano\nLearn more about Colin Eaton\, tenor\nLearn more about Terrence Wilson\, pianist\nLearn more about Kendall Gladen\, mezzo-soprano \n  \nProgram Notes
