Concerts

How long do most concerts last?

Our Altria Masterworks and Symphony Pops concerts are usually 1 to 2 hours long with an intermission. The Metro Collection concerts are usually 1 hour with an intermission. Our Union Bank & Trust LolliPops,  Rush Hour at Hardywood and Casual Fridays concerts are about an hour and do not have an intermission. Click here to visit a concert’s individual page for more information on the length of that concert.

When should I get there?

For our Altria Masterworks concerts the lobbies open 1.5 hours early and our pre-concert talk begins 1 hour before the concert. For the Union Bank & Trust LolliPops concerts, the lobbies open at 9:30am and our pre-concert festival begins at 10am. For our Metro Collection, Symphony Pops, and Casual Fridays concerts, the lobbies open 1 hour early. Seating for all concerts begins 30 minutes prior to the concert. We encourage you to arrive 30-40 minutes early.

What should I wear to an orchestra performance?

Most patrons dress in business casual, but there is no dress code. Please feel free to wear whatever makes you most comfortable.

Is there a coat check?

There is a free coat check at the Conceirge desk for concerts at the Carpenter Theatre. Our other venues do not offer a coat check.

When do I applaud?

During our Altria Masterworks, Metro Collection and Casual Fridays concerts, it is customary to hold your applause until all movements are complete. However, if you feel the urge to applaud, please do so! During the Symphony Pops, Rush Hour at Hardywood and Union Bank & Trust LolliPops concerts, people applaud freely throughout!

Can I take pictures?

Please feel free to take pictures without a flash during the concert and share them with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. We just ask that you be mindful of your neighbors.

Can I take audio or video recordings?

Due to copyright laws, audio and video recording is strictly prohibited inside the concert hall.

Can I bring my children to concerts?

Yes! Children’s tickets are good for ages 3-17. Children receive a free ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket for all Altria Masterworks and Casual Fridays concerts. Our Union Bank & Trust LolliPops concerts are only an hour long and are a perfect introduction to the Symphony for children. Children 2 and under are welcome to attend our Union Bank & Trust LolliPops concerts for free. Visit our Family Concerts page for more information on family-friendly performances.

Seating

What if I have accessible seating needs?

Accessible seating is available by request at all concerts. Please call Patron Services 804.788.1212 for more information.

What if I arrive late?

Concerts begin promptly at the scheduled time and latecomers will be seated at a natural break in the music, guided by ushers. If you must leave the hall during the performance, please do so quietly. Re-entry while the concert is in progress is at the discretion and guidance of the ushers.

Pricing

Are discounts available for college students?

Absolutely! Click here for information about the SOUNDWAVE card which gives you unlimited access to our Altria Masterworks and Casual Fridays concerts. Discounted student tickets are also available for most of our concerts. Tickets must be purchased in person at the Carpenter Theatre or Altria Theater box offices and the student must present a valid student ID. Call Patron Services at 804.788.1212 to confirm pricing for individual concerts.

What are the benefits of becoming a subscriber? How do I subscribe?

Subscribers save up to 15% off single ticket prices, receive first priority seating, and are allowed to exchange tickets. Visit our subscriptions page or call Patron Services at 804.788.1212 for more information on pricing and other benefits.

Subscription Tickets

How to Purchase Single Tickets

ONLINE: Click here to purchase online and choose your seats.

PHONE:  Call 1.800.514.ETIX to purchase tickets by phone.

IN PERSON: Visit the Carpenter Theatre or Altria Theater box office to purchase tickets in person. Both box offices offer free 30-minute street parking next to their entrances. Unless the concert is sold out, tickets are also sold at the door starting at least 1.5 hours prior to the concert.

Can I get a refund if I am unable to attend?

All ticket sales are final. Subscribers may exchange tickets for another series concert. Visit the Subscriptions page for more information. Individual ticket-buyers may donate their tickets back to the Symphony prior to the concert to receive a donation receipt for their taxes. How can I pay less ticketing fees?

Ticket fees are set and collected by SMG, the management company of the Carpenter Theatre, Altria Theater and eTix. Ticket fees online and by phone are the same. Ticket fees are usually much lower for tickets purchased in person at the box office. The exception are tickets for our LolliPops concerts and any tickets that cost $20 or less for concerts being held in the Carpenter Theater or the Gottwald Playhouse.

General Ticketing Information

Children:

  • Children’s tickets are for children ages 3 to 17.
  • Child tickets are FREE to any of our Altria Masterworks or Dominion Casual Fridays series concerts (excludes Mezzanine seating).
  • Children 2 and under are welcome to attend our Union Bank & Trust Lollipops concerts free as a “babe in arms.” No ticket required.

Seniors:  Senior rates apply to patrons who are 65+.

Will Call: Will Call for the Richmond Symphony concerts opens 1.5 hours prior to the concert.
