SUMMARY:Brahms Requiem\, Barber Adagio
DESCRIPTION:Join the Richmond Symphony and Richmond Symphony Chorus\, with Music Director Steven Smith\, in commemorating the 100th year anniversary of Armistice 1918. This memorable Altria Masterworks program features Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem\, Op. 45\, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Butterworth’s The Banks of Green Willow.  \nThe dark\, unusually low registers lend an air of reverence and contemplation to Brahm’s Requiem.  In the words of Clara Schumann\, “It is a truly tremendous piece of art which moves the entire being in a way little else does.” \nBarber’s Adagio for Strings is a serious piece of music that is firmly embedded in the consciousness of nearly every American. Composer William Schumann gives a wonderfully concise listening guide: “[Adagio for Strings] is so precise emotionally. It begins\, it reaches its climax\, it makes its point\, and it goes away.” \nGeorge Butterworth wrote his The Banks of Green Willow before World War I even started\, but it is seen as emblematic of the “lost generation” from that war\, and is often played to commemorate it. \nProgram Notes \nLearn more about Steven Smith\, conductor. \nLearn more about Darren K. Strokes\, bass-baritone. \nLearn more about Martha Guth\, soprano. \nRennolds Memorial Concert \n  \nSeries Sponsor \nConcert Sponsor \nMedia Sponsor \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Metro Collection 1
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy classical music in an intimate setting. Metro concerts feature smaller scale works from the classical repertoire and newer pieces by contemporary composers. Richmond Symphony musicians are often featured soloists. The opening Metro Collection performance will feature classics from Mozart and Haydn. Mozart’s Overture  to The Abduction from Seraglio\, features Turkish instrumental themes in the dynamic opening to the most successful opera of his lifetime. \nThe classical works are complimented by modernist pieces from American composer Charles Ives and contemporary Turkish pianist Fazil Say. Say’s Symphonic Dances are strongly influenced by his Turkish roots. In the spirit of Liszt\, Rachmaninoff and Bartók\, Say has often incorporated the dance music of his homeland into his chamber music. \nLearn more about Steven Smith\, conductor \nProgram Notes

SUMMARY:4U - A Symphonic Celebration of Prince
DESCRIPTION:April 21\, 2016 will live in infamy as the day we lost a genius\, an icon\, a legend. Prince is widely regarded as one of the best musicians ever to live\, and one of the greatest showmen of all time. His music makes up the soundtracks of our lives- from the parties of our youth to our weddings; and we share his music with our children who repeat the cycle. Great music lives on forever\, and\, it’s with this in mind that we introduce “4U: A Symphonic Celebration of Prince.”\n\nThe first and only estate-approved Prince celebration\, 4U will present the music of Prince like never before\, with a full symphony orchestra.  Throughout the course of the evening Prince’s extensive musical catalog will be represented\, we’ll hear his greatest hits as well as some of his lesser known gems in this musical celebration. Questlove\, an avid Prince fan\, has helped curate the music and arrangements that will be played by the Richmond Symphony.\n\n\nThis concert is being produced by the Altria Theater. Please call the Altria Theater Box Office at 804.592.3384×3 for more information.
