SUMMARY:Celebrate MLK 2023
DESCRIPTION:This concert for all generations celebrates the inspiring message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through an uplifting and diverse repertoire featuring spirituals\, hymns and other stirring compositions by Black artists of the past and present\, with an emphasis on Virginia voices. \nThe concert will start with a special welcome from the Black History Museum of Virginia’s Board President\, Dr. Monroe E. Harris\, Jr. The fantastic Brown Ballerinas for Change\, a local social justice organization formed to increase participation of underrepresented populations in ballet\, will perform during the concert. Isaac Wilson\, a talented member of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra Program\, will be a featured violin soloist. With this residency\, the Richmond Symphony embarks on a new model of a holistic and long-term residency program\, reaching far into the local community and laying the foundation for future composers. \nDuring his first season in residence with the Symphony\, Geter curates a concert at Hardywood Brewery\, engages with young\, local composers and  explores collaborations utilizing the interdisciplinary nature of music within a diverse range of art forms. \nDuring the full extent of the residency Geter will compose new compositions for the Richmond Symphony to be premiered during the 23/24 and 24/25 seasons\, and spend time working with the Richmond Symphony\, the Richmond Symphony Chorus and the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra\, while engaging with patrons\, donors and Richmond community members along the way. The legacy of the role will mean that the canon of symphonic music will grow and the Richmond Symphony will become known as a place of new music creation. \n“Being a Composer-in-Residence for the Richmond Symphony is an incredible honor. SUMMARY:Tribute Gospel Ensemble and The Richmond Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Gospel and symphony fans unite! Join us this year as The Cultural Arts Center pairs the Tribute Gospel Ensemble and the Richmond Symphony on the Sara Belle November Stage in this popular\, annual concert series. The Tribute Gospel Ensemble is a Richmond based Gospel group out of First African Baptist Church\, one of the oldest black churches in the region celebrating its 242nd anniversary in 2022. This choir was formed over 20 years ago by its dynamic music director\, Ms. Michelle Lightfoot.  Tribute has opened for such talents as: Richard Smallwood; Smokie Norful\, and Darryl Coley.  They have also been fortunate to share stages with the likes of Maurette Brown Clark\, Sunday Best contestant Crystal Aikin and others. This group has successfully shared their songs of praise across the Eastern region and continue to celebrate all new opportunities and venues. \n

This concert is free\, no ticket required. \n  \nThe Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) offers a pre-college orchestra experience for the serious student musician. Nearly all members of RSYO study with private instructors and all are leaders in their school programs. RSYO performs masterworks of the orchestral repertoire and\, once each season\, performs side-by-side with the Richmond Symphony. In RSYO\, students hold themselves to a high level of discipline\, preparation and musicianship.
