SUMMARY:The Flying Dutchman
DESCRIPTION:Seafaring stories of sailors and his own disastrous sea journey inspired Wagner to compose his masterful opera The Flying Dutchman in a very dramatic style. The irrevocable\, redemptive power of love – set to a mesmerizing score – uses the supernatural and haunting\, rocky coast of Norway to set the stage for a an epic\, spellbinding voyage. Will the lovers make the ultimate sacrifice? Come aboard and find out! \nThe season concludes with a stunning production directed by Washington National Opera’s Artistic Director\, Francesca Zambello\, and made famous at Glimmerglass Festival as well as Hawaii Opera Theatre. Lauded by the Chicago Sun-Times for his “rich\, dark tone and beautiful legato\,” bass-baritone Wayne Tigges conquers the role of the Dutchman. Recently seen on Virginia Opera stages singing the title role in Ariadne auf Naxos (2014)\, experience Christina Pier’s monumental debut in the Wagnerian repertoire\, as she unleashes her “big\, gleaming soprano” in the role of Senta. \nSung in German with English Supertitles \n

SUMMARY:Orpheus in the Underworld
DESCRIPTION:An irreverent parody – complete with the “Can-Can” – join Virginia Opera for this hilarious spoof. Offenbach\, a master of musical burlesque\, uses the backdrop of a Greek myth about an unhappy couple who become the victims of meddling Olympian gods to set the stage for his caricature of serious opera – and we all get a good laugh in the process! \nAs the seductive king of the gods\, Virginia Opera proudly welcomes back baritone Troy Cook (Jupiter) – a graduate of Virginia Opera’s Emerging Artist Program\, now enjoying a major international career singing with the Royal Opera\, Covent Garden\, Staatsoper Hamburg\, and Semperoper Dresden. \n
