What exactly would I do?
As the Production Stage Manager, your primary goal will be to ensure the seamless execution of every performance. You will find yourself managing stage operations and coordinating rehearsal logistics to facilitating smooth communication across departments. Working closely with artistic staff, the music library, and production colleagues, you will prepare and distribute key performance materials, oversee concert and rehearsal requirements, and serve as the central hub for all staging, timing, and technical needs. In addition, you will act as the Symphony’s primary stage liaison for recordings, broadcasts, and special events, contributing directly to the experience of both audiences and musicians alike.
What qualifications and skills do I need?
Highly developed organizational skills, effective time management and flexibility are key attributes. Experience in stage management, and general knowledge of an orchestra is critical. Demonstrated composure under pressure, and the ability to foster positive relationships with musicians, conducting staff, visiting artists and technical crew will lead to success. Familiarity in computer applications such as Word, Excel, and Microsoft 365 is required, knowledge of or experience in OPAS would be a huge asset. Punctuality, collegiality, and attention to detail are vital to success. Lifting of 50-100 lbs. is required for this role. The ability to travel to and from different venues and events is required, including a valid VA drivers license. You must be available to work a robust schedule of evening and/or weekend performances and events throughout the season, as well as on-site at the Symphony offices in downtown Richmond.
What’s the compensation and benefits?
This is a full-time position with an annual salary of $32,000. Overtime is likely and compensated at 1.5X. Benefits include health, dental, telemedicine, vision, disability and instrument insurances, a flexible spending or health savings account, flexible paid time off, sick leave, parking, and a 403(b) plan. Limited remote work is possible, but this role has significant in-person requirements, including many evenings and weekends throughout the year.
