Richmond Symphony Welcomes First Music Director Candidate Roderick Cox

Richmond, Va. (Oct. 1, 2019)—The Richmond Symphony’s first Music Director Candidate Roderick Cox will introduce himself to the Richmond community through a series of upcoming Symphony concerts and events.  These include:

  • Rush Hour at Hardywood concert on , Oct. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery
  • Metro Series concert on , Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. at Randolph-Macon College, Blackwell Auditorium (Ashland, Va.); pre-concert talk with Cox at 2 p.m.
  • Altria Masterworks concert on , Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. at Dominion Energy Center for the Performing Arts, Carpenter Theater, with Brandie Sutton, soprano; pre-concert talk with Cox at 7 p.m.
  • Altria Masterworks concert on , Oct. 27 at 3 p.m. at Longwood University, Jarman Auditorium, with Brandie Sutton, soprano

Cox, who is the former associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra and former assistant conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, received national acclaim in 2018 as winner of the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.  He has gone on to guest-conduct with some of the nation’s premier orchestras and ensembles, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, and Houston Grand Opera.

Cox is the first of five music director candidates leading the Symphony in the 2019-20 season and vying to follow former Music Director Steven Smith, who stepped down from the position at the end of last season. The other candidates are Ankush Kumar Bahl, Laura Jackson, Valentina Peleggi and Farkhad Khudyev.

The Richmond Symphony Search Committee received more than 200 applications before selecting the final candidates. The next Music Director of the Richmond Symphony is expected to be announced in May 2020.
